Black History Month Feature: The Unorthodox Brand

By NaTyshca Pickett

One primary motivation for highlighting Black businesses is to address historical and systemic inequality in economic possibilities. Throughout history, Black entrepreneurs have encountered discrimination, limited access to financing, and unequal commercial possibilities. By aggressively featuring and supporting Black businesses, we help to address these inequities and promote economic fairness. This recognition contributes to the breakdown of barriers and the creation of a more inclusive business climate, helping Black entrepreneurs to gain attention, grow, and succeed.

For this feature, I present to you The Unorthodox Brand.

Created by Melissa Mason, Unorthodox offers its clients daring and distinctive designs that will make them stand out and attract those coveted second looks. They specialize in high-quality, limited-edition items, so each piece is meticulously hand-made and distinct from the others.

Their design inspiration comes from the 70s and 90s eras. A culture of strength, independence, resistance, and resilience characterized these decades. For individuals who prefer to stand out, they craft large, striking, fashionable, and enthralling pieces from leather, metals, and fabric.

The creative representation of their desired appearance in an industry that exclusively acknowledges a specific body type and beauty standard is unorthodox. Taking that route is not something they are considering. They will forge their way, deviating from the path others have taken.

To learn more, be sure to check out Unorthodox and stay connected with them on Instagram and TikTok.
