Lasgidi Cafe - An Amazing Tasting Experience

By NaTyshca Pickett

The owner Patience (Chef Patty) Obunbanjo, uprooted to a city where there was not a single Nigerian eatery. After getting sick of "dining out" every night, she began experimenting with traditional Nigerian dishes. Now, eight years later, Lasgidi Cafe is a fully licensed, insured, and operating food delivery/pickup business, delivering authentic, homemade West African and "soulful" cuisine to the general public via delivery and pickup.

I had the pleasure of attending a Dining Experience in a private tasting event, hosted by Lasgidi Cafe, located in Phoenix, AZ. Each guest was presented with a five-course meal that our taste buds will not forget.

The menu consisted of Nigerian Salad, Patty & Peppered Chicken/Beef, Egusi and Pounded Yam, and Chin Chin Apple Crumble.

The Nigerian Salad was similar to a cob salad, with the exception of adding beans and not ham.

We were gifted with the treat of the Puff Puff during our experience. Check out the description and video below.

The next item was the world-renowned Nigerian Jollof Rice. There is a debate about whether Nigeria or Ghana has the best, one debate I will not get into. The Jollof patty was provided with either chicken or beef. It was a mix of succulent rice flavored with bell peppers, tomatoes, onions, spices, and a bit of the history of Jollof Rice.

The star of the night was the Egusi and Pounded Yam. This entree was absolutely amazing and literally melted in my mouth. The egusi was bursting with flavors cooked in palm oil stew and assorted meats. The pounded yam is a great compliment to dip in the egusi. As you can see, I was about to dig in before getting a pic…LOL!

Last, but definitely not least, was the Chin Chin Apple Crumble. This is the Nigerian take on Apple Crumble and ice cream for a little razzle-dazzle. The soft caramelized apple filling and the crisp cinnamon chin chin topping are the epitome of comfort food.

This event was one for the books and I suggest that if you have not had an opportunity to experience the flavors of Lasgidi, you are missing out. However, you are in luck because some events are coming up where you can get your chance to experience Lasgidi. Follow Lasgidi on Instagram for more events and the website to sign up for classes!
