Black History Month Feature: The Diaspora Collective

By NaTyshca Pickett

One primary motivation for highlighting Black businesses is to address historical and systemic inequality in economic possibilities. Throughout history, Black entrepreneurs have encountered discrimination, limited access to financing, and unequal commercial possibilities. By aggressively featuring and supporting Black businesses, we help to address these inequities and promote economic fairness. This recognition contributes to the breakdown of barriers and the creation of a more inclusive business climate, helping Black entrepreneurs to gain attention, grow, and succeed.

For this feature, I present to you The Diaspora Collective.

The Diaspora Collective is a movement to celebrate, discover, connect and empower Africa and the African Diaspora. Latha restaurant and Bar celebrates the flavors of Africa, the Caribbean, Brazil and the Southern US. Soko, is a market to discover goods made and designed by Black artisans.

The founder Evelia Davis, nnthusiastic about sharing what she's learned and assisting others in leading lives that are genuine, full of joy, and filled with love. While an undergraduate at Berkeley, she took African American Studies courses that sparked an interest in Africa and the African diaspora. Something about Africa's storied past and vibrant culture sparked an interest in learning more. In 2012, she did just that, fulfilling her lifelong desire of visiting South Africa and Zambia in Africa. What started as a seedling a long time ago is now blossoming into the Diaspora Collective's vision.
