Black History Month Feature: Clara’s Closet

By NaTyshca Pickett

One primary motivation for highlighting Black businesses is to address historical and systemic inequality in economic possibilities. Throughout history, Black entrepreneurs have encountered discrimination, limited access to financing, and unequal commercial possibilities. By aggressively featuring and supporting Black businesses, we help to address these inequities and promote economic fairness. This recognition contributes to the breakdown of barriers and the creation of a more inclusive business climate, helping Black entrepreneurs to gain attention, grow, and succeed.

For this feature, I present to you Clara’s Closet by founder Kay Nicole.

Clara's Closet is named after my loving grandmother. Clara was born in Georgia and relocated to Chicago in the 1950s in search of better possibilities.

She loved the "Windy City" so much that she stayed in Chicago until she died in 2017. In 2015, I moved to Chicago from South Korea. I adore Chicago, exactly like my Grandma. Clara was sophisticated, confident, and enjoyed traveling. Kenya, Egypt, and China are just a few of the many destinations she has visited. My mother, Avondale, and I are also world travelers, having visited over fifty countries together.

My mother makes handmade knitted garments at Clara's Closet. We understand that our clothing isn't for everyone, and that's what makes us unique. We wanted to show our Black pride, love of fashion, and travel. We are grateful that our creativity has been embraced.
